I am a pilot and was originally assigned to the 9th SOS flying HC-47's at Phang Rang in Nov 70. They had too many pilots so I was transferred to the EC-47 and 360th TEWs in mid Nov. Actually there were two of us being reassigned. Personnel had one assignment to Da Nang and one to Saigon. I spoke first and got Saigon. I had no desire to go to "Rocket City". I came from SAC where I was a co-pilot on the KC-135's at K I Sawyer AFB, MI. I flew approximately 125-145 missions over all the normal places (RVN, Cambodia, and Laos). I did the aircraft maintenance ferries to NKP twice, an aircraft IRAN delivery and pickup at CCK, with the associated R/R to Taipei. It sure was nice flying a "New" EC-47 back. I remember seeing the workers climbing all over the plane we brought in and seeing some flour and coal dust coming out. That was residue from when those planes flew in the Berlin airlift. I remember talking with my dad who flew C-47's in the airlift and he remembered some of the tail numbers. It was something flying aircraft that were older that I was. I remember spending many late afternoons playing "jungle rules" volleyball by our BOQ's and then it was "Happy Hour" until the ice ran out. I think we had more injuries from volleyball than anything else. Like most of the other guys, I had the small refrigerator and all the latest stereo equipment and tape deck. Spent many an hour dubbing tapes at the tape center. I still have the TEAC 4010 recorder and lots of tapes. Needless to say they just collect dust now. Many of the young guys (lieutenants and captains) were planning on getting out and going to fly with the airlines. I was 32 which was too old so I stayed in the Air Force. Since I was in SAC before Vietnam, my TDY time in Thailand counted toward reducing my DEROS back to the states. I spent the latter part of my tour with the 360th as an instructor pilot primarily checking out the new guys and upgrading guys to aircraft commander. The night of my finish party they had a "rocket attack" at Ton Son Nhut but some of us were totally unaware of it until we wondered where all the people went. I remember the most nervous time of my whole tour was when I was at the passenger terminal waiting for our go home flight to arrive; us get on it, and depart the airport. After the 360th my next assignment was to KC-135Q model tankers at Beale AFB, CA refueling the SR-71. I retired in 1987. After that, I was a pilot with American Airlines until 2004 when I retired again. For everyone associated with EC-47 operations there were long hours, hot days, rain and a lot of work. During my tour, I was very fortunate to be associated with a lot of great guys. If it were not for the war and family separation, it would have been a great assignment. Regards,
Alan H. Brown II

Sept. 11th, 2009 Received from, Milton P. Smith, III
I happen to talk with a past member of the 361 TEWS the other day after I had noticed that he flew EC-47 out of Saigon during 1972-73. I called his office to chat and he mentioned this website. So, I took a few minutes and surf the site and it brought back so many memories. I was a Flight Mechanic on the EC-47. My roommates were Bruce Damon and William Cook while in DaNang but I transferred to NKP in May 72 until I rotated back to the states Nov 72. I don't remember many of the flight crews names but it was good reading about those time. For all those out there that maybe wondering what or who I am, I was the skinny black kid from New Orleans that played jazz music when driving the crew bus -better known as "Smitty" I wish you guys the best Email Address: djazzman1906(at)yahoo.com or milton_smith(at)raytheon.com Postal Address:

Feb. 13th, 2010. Received from, Don Allen Near Dallas, Texas
I served in the 360th as a pilot from Sep of 71 to August of 72. I entered as a Lt and left as a Capt. I was one of the many that came from the 1st MAS at Dover Del. I have fond memories of the mission, the Cherry Flight (first as Aircraft Commander) and the nightly pool game and movies . I still have a picture of the squadron mascot dog on my wall. He was sitting in the pilot seat of an EC. I served along with Charlie Coolege, who became a 3 Star and retired fairly recently from the AF. When I left Saigon, I took an assignment to Athens, Greece. Flew C47's there too for a year; put in charge of 3 aircraft, flying mail to NATO COM sites in Greece and Turkey. After my 6 year tour in the AF, I flew corporate aircraft for AT&T and Lucent Technologies for 25 years. I then instructed at Simuflite in Dallas for 8 years. Retired from aviation last Feb. I talked to Alan Simmons, who served in the EC's. Alan also worked at Simuflite in Dallas.,I had hoped to attend the reunion in San Antonio but my wife's health kept me away. I do have some photo's in a scrapbook. Not sure if they would be any use or not. I no longer have the negatives. I can sit back and still smell the food in the "O-Club" and still taste the beer we drank playing "Liars Dice". I often think of Jim Staber, another pilot when I was there. He taught me all I know about photography during our two week hiatus at Clark AB. We were trying to ferry an aircraft back from Inspection in Tawain. I have never seen it rain so hard and for so long since. We finally put an extra fuel tank in the aircraft to get enough fuel to go from Clark to Tan Son Nhut. I hope to meet you. I will be going thru the great Web Site. What a discovery it is for me! April 22nd, 2010 Received from, Frank E. Owen of Waco, Texas
Found a new entry in the Guestbook from Frank. Frank was one of six of us who shared the Villa at Number 2 Me Lien in Nha Trang in 1966/67 while flying with the 361st TEWS on the EC-47's. Frank had been on the site and was amazed at the content and photos, including one of he and I sitting at the table (Home made from plywood and 2x4's) drinking a beer. He also now knows what 40 years makes in the way the Villa looked then and how it looks today thanks to another friend for a current photo of the Villa. We talked on the phone the next day for about 30 minutes and relived a few of the old memories of those days gone by. This was a very enjoyable visit for both of us and we expect to again meet face to face soon after 43 years. So many of our other friends are already gone on to greener pastures. I believe Frank was Flight Mechanic for Col. Crozier's crew during our tour at Nha Trang. Email Address: Postal Address: 8596 Briargrove Drive Waco, Texas 76712 Phone: (254) 732-4845
