I must appologize for being so long in getting Dave on the site. Dave has been with us from the first reunion in San Antonio in 1999. I guess it was because he did not have a computer, I never got him added, I am sorry Dave. J.C.
Dave was a Flight Mechanic with the 361st Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron at Nha Trang in 1967/68. Dave was also one of the lucky ones who were shot down in an EC-47 and survived to tell his story. Dave was on Brew-41 when it was shot down on March 11th, 1968. You can see photos of this under Mission Losses.

Norman left this information;
I am a former 6994 aircrew member, a Morse Intercept Operator (Diddy
Bop), serving in Da Nang from 1971-1972. We were reassigned to NKP in
1972. I mostly remember how hot it was, the almost daily rainfall in
the mid afternoon and the Skeeter Theater. I remember my former
roommate Vaimili Tuialuuluu, then later David Crutchfield. I see David
is not on the site. I last saw him in Nashville, Tennessee in 1973.
I found this site thanks to Zebedee Willie, who I met at a VmWare
(Virtual Memory) symposium in Dallas, 2008. We were accidently sitting
at the same table and I heard him talking about C47 stuff. So, where is
Sgt. Saddler's information? I don't remember his exact rank, except it
was about my paltry E3.
As the graffitti said there on the bathroom wall in Da Nang, "As I slide
down the bannister of life, I will always remember Vietnam as a splinter
up my ass!"
Thank God I learned a skill that turned out "SO" useful in the real
world, after I left the Air Force! You never know when you'll see an
old Hogan's Heroes rerun and get the opporunity to copy the morse code
they use. Man, they were good!

Phil says, I worked on the Nav Computers and that "cute" little color Radar. My first exoerience with the EC-47 was in 1966 at Clark AB. They were removing the fuel tanks from the interior. Maintenance control called and said they had a C-47 with Radar problems and wanted me to look at it. I was shocked to see the airplane outfited with modern commercial electronics. After the Philippines, I went to Carswell AFB, TX. Exactly 11 months later I received PCS orders to the 14 SOW, Nha Trang AB, RVN with a 10 day window to report. My supervisor, Tsgt George Byras, said that I would be suprised when I got there. His last duty station had been Nha Trang.
The only thing I hated about the assignment was being in the 14 FMS. EC-47's were the only thing we supported. The 14 FMS commander used to come around and rave &rant outside the door while we covered the equipment. My replacement at Nha Trang was scheduled to arrive and I was to go out on the same aircraft. I'll never forget the look on my supervisors face when he told me the name and I told him the AFSN. Ernie and I had gone thru the Phoenix Armed Forces Induction Center and his AFSN was number less than mine.
I think that this was the best part of my life seeing all the "old obsolete" aircraft. Philippines B-57B and F102 (last operational acft). Thiland A26 (NKP, 505th Air Commando Sq). Nha Trang EC-47, AC-47, AC-119.
I'm rambling but the Air Force just isn't the same now. I worked in civil service for the Utah Test and Training Range and at Nellis AFB in Air Traffic Control Automation until 2005 when I retired with 42 years Federal Service. My observation is that instead of "Work Hard, Play Hard" it's now just a 8-5 job for most airmen.

JC, I am happy to find such a site. I have often thought of the time I served as a back end crew member on a EC-47. I was enlisted at the time and my job was 202-50 radio analyst specialist. I had 101 combat missions mostly out of NKP Thailand in 1973 and 74.
I definitely will be at the reunion in May 2010, God willing.
Sincerely,
Robert L Kennedy Jr, Major USAFR Retired

I was there. I arrived at Nha Trang in (I think) April 1969, was a Flight Line Mechanic working on the EC 47s, and was there while the Squadron went to NKP on TDY for three weeks. We stayed at Peiku overnight enroute.) We eventually ended up at Phu Kat, where I served out the rest of my assignment in Viet Nam. I don't remember too many of the people but I have some pictures that I can scan, and maybe you can make out who they are and put names on them for me. I will post my picture as well. Currently I have become a member of the VFW, in Dallas Oregon. please write back. If you know of any other websites to visit, please let me know of them.

Joe was one of the bunch that made Number 2 Me Lein home for at least a part of their tour with the 361st at Nha Trang in 1966/67. The information below is from the daughter of Joe, in part not the entire email letter. Joe retired as M/SGT from USAF 1975, at KI Sawyer AFB, Mich.
Hello Mr Wheeler,
Thank you so much for writing back and providing the link to those photos of your crew, and all those with my Dad in Vietnam! Wow, what a great coincidence it was to end up writing to you and later find out you guys all lived together in the same *hootch* as he called it!!! We've just viewed them and he's with me right now, and my Mother too. He said those were really nice and he enjoyed looking at them. They don't have a computer and I just recently got this and am
learning!
Joe is wondering how you've been and if you have heard how your crew and his crew have been after all these years. Physically, he says he can't make it to the reunion next year in Florida, however, he would like to get updates on how the others are. We can send a recent photo of him (but I have'nt figured it out on computer yet ) . Joe and I want to comment about the EC47 website--It's great!!...(He reminisced about his past and decided to see what he could find on the
computer the other day, since I was showing it to him wanted to see what info on ec47 or newsletters assoc with it)
Thanks again for writing

Robert says, Just ran across your site. Lot of blurry memories. Arrived at Det 1 Nha Trang 21 June 1966. We didn't have much to work with and spent a lot of time filling sand bags and attempting to get transportation for Crowell and Mellott. Was one of the two 202's at the time. The other was Bob Shulte. Both of us were curtailed after we volunteered to extend our tours (logic) and left in December of 1966. I returned in July of 1967 as a A202 and departed in August 1968.
