Received from, Grady W. Phillips, Ocean View New Jersey

I was a 202 stationed at NKP Thailand from Aug 69 to July 70. Lots of good memories of NKP. I flew 108 missions out of NKP, primarily over the PDJ but some over the Steel Tiger area as well. I saw the reference to acft # 009 in the guest book. I ran into her in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993. She was owned by an outfit called New Zealand Caterers and was leased by the UN (I guess). She had lost all her electronics by then. I ran into her when she was assigned to me to fly an up-country med evac mission. That was my job by then. I had gotten a direct commission in 1990 and was then a 1st Lt. Seeing her brought back a flood of memories and the memories got even sharper when I saw the original tail number on a plate in the Flight Engineers cubby. She flew the med evac mission in a fine fashion. Probably half of the missions I flew out of NKP were flown on 009. I love that airplane. She never let us down.

I remember a particular mission we flew over the Steel Tiger area. We had a major on board who was flying co-pilot just to get in his hours. He normally flew a desk at TFA. About 2 hours into the mission, he went to check the throttles and the mixture as was required and instead of pushing one throttle at a time to "Full Rich", he grabbed both throttles and pulled them back to "Idle Cutoff". We lost both engines within 10 seconds. That was the quietest moment I ever spent on a 47. As we headed down toward the Laotian jungle, the pilot got on the horn and told us he was going to try a restart but that I should hand out the chest packs just in case. He did not need to tell me because I had already given them all to the back enders, even the nav and was in the process of throwing one forward to the Flight Engineer. Fortunately, we got both engines restarted and finished the mission. When we got back to NKP, the pilot asked the major to stay on board for a moment the he shut the door. All we heard was a single thud and the admonishment that the major had better get the entire crew drunk that night or else. Needless to say, we all got very drunk on the major's paycheck.

After 7 + years of active duty and achieving the rank of SSGT., I got out of the AF and I was out for almost 10 years. When I finally realized what was missing from my life, I went into the PA Air Guard and then transferred to the AF Reserve. In the Reserve, I quickly made TSGT and then MSGT and got the job of Air Base Group First Sergeant. In August of 1989, I started the commissioning process and was sworn in as a 2Lt in May of 1990. My job on the officer side of the house was that of Aeromedical Evacuation Operations Officer. I eventually got to make Major and I retired after a total of 27 years in October, 2003. It was a hell of a ride and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

Pat writes: I just recently found your site and was pleasantly surprised to find my name--thought most has forgotten about me. I will list my trivia info in the order your form laid out and hope you'll find in enlightening.

Pat was a Captain Det.2, 6994 Scty Sq/6994 Scty Sq Danang VN/NKP, Thailand Chief of Maintenance/ Det Commander 1972/1973

I reported to Danang, Det 2, 6994 Scty Sq, 14 Nov 72, as the Chief of Maintenance. The 6994 Scty Sq was headquartered at Tan Son Nhut at that time, with Lt Col Eddy as the Commander. As the ceasefire in Jan 73, necessitated the closure of the Squadron and Dets in VN, most personnel PCSd to Ubon or NKP, Thailand or rotated to other assignments. NKP became the home of the 6994 Scty Sq with a Det at Ubon. I simply don't recall if there were other Dets in Thailand at that time or not--I am getting old you know. When I arrived at Det 2 in Danang, Captain Bill Shea was the Commander and Captain Kermit Wegner was the Ops officer. Captain Shea PCSd to Ubon, and I took over as the last Detachment Commander of Det 2, 6994 Scty Sq. This was in January 1972 as I recall. Captain Kermit Wegner and I were the last two 6994 Scty SQ personnel to leave VN. We shipped all the remaining equipment to one base or another--most to Thailand and turned the physical buildings of Det 2 over to a VNAF Brig General, who's name I doubt if I ever knew. I do recall, he had a mole on one of his cheeks with a four or five inch hair growing out of it, while he was clean shaven otherwise. It was difficult not to break up laughing. He was extremely rude and refused to even return out salutes. Funny how I can remember something like that.

I don't recall for sure where Captain Wegner ended up, but I think it was Security Service HQ at Kelly AFB, TX. I PCSd to NKP, Thailand, 6 Mar 1973, and resumed my duties as Chief of Maintenance, this time for the Squadron itself. Major H. M. Watts was the 6994SS, CC at that time and I served under him until he left and Major Roger Bishop took over as CC. Major Bishop was still CC when I PCSd to Security Service HQ, Kelly AFB, 22 Sep 73. As I recall, Major Jim Golden was Ops officer at NKP, but can't remember who replaced him. He may have still been there when I left.

I noticed some errors in your Commander's Listings regarding the 6994th and it's Dets and can try to shed some light if you are interested. I am more able to tell you what "wasn't" in some cases the then what "was," but it may help.

I look forward to reviewing your site as time permits, as I find new and memory triggering things every time I log into it. It's great! You are most welcome to update my name with my E-mail address if you'd like. I'd love to hear form old friends. Thanks for keeping the memories alive.

Sincerely, Patrick D. Rife, Lt Col, USAF (ret) Better yet--just Pat

Spent most of 1972 at Da Nang as an Instructor Pilot/Flight Examiner. Remember coming into DaNang in late Jan. with Flip Keck and Ken Martin after jungle survival at Clark. Went for vacation leave in June and came back to find half of the squadron was now at NKP. I always wondered how the selection process went. Remember our trip to IRAN at CCK took almost a month. Al Laszlo kept getting sick. All in all an enjoyable year and got to come home right before Thanksgiving 1972.

Received from, Jim Lashua, Charlotte, North Carolina

Jim was a Pilot with the 360th Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron from June 1971 to June 1972.

Jim says, I arrived in Tan Son Nhut AB in June 1971, fresh out of Pilot Training, wet behind the ears, and gung ho. I volunteered for Viet Nam not knowing what I was getting into, but invincible, and knowing I could get a good pick on my next aircraft after Viet Nam. Man, what a year. Got a real good taste of reality.

Met my two good friends who were in the same hooch with me (the "Nursery", remember guys!), Bob Looney and Bob Bonn. I would sure like to meet up with them again.

A pilot training classmate of mine, David Holley, also flew gooney birds over there the same time, but was stationed at NKP, Thailand, I believe.

I remember flying a maintenance crew into some jungle airstrip at night on New Years Eve and thinking, this sure would be a hellofa way to go, bringing in the New Year without a bottle of "Beam" or nothing. Just had to wait it out until the engine was repaired. Eerie feeling with the parachute flares floating down all night. The grunts fighting the ground war had it rough over there.

Also crashed on takeoff once over there, as co-pilot, shortly after arriving in Tan Son Nhut. A crosswind weathervaned the plane so we were skidding down the runway 90 degrees from centerline. Finally veered off, snapped one gear, prop stuck in the fuselage right behind the pilot, but thankfully it did not catch on fire.

Somehow those mechanics put that plane back together again, before I left 9 months later. The last three digits on the plane was "009"; balls nine we called it! That was one of my lives!

I would really like to see alot of my brothers at the reunion this year, but I have a friend's son's wedding to attend, the same weekend. Hopefully, you all will do it again.

Received from, Elden Teall, Sebring, Florida

Elden was an Airborne Mission Supervisor and NCOIC Airborne Operations with Det. 1, 6994th SS at Phu Cat from August, 1970 to August, 1971.

Flew 140 missions, to include helping the CIA locate targets in Laos. CIA worked from strip at Pakse, Laos. On final to land a Phu Cat. Pilot says "guys we just got waved off" A MIG 21 with Cambondian marking was under our left wing in for a landing. Heard our CIA has stole it from Cambodian Govt. Next day, plane was boxed and sent stateside. Caught many black pajamas on N. end of runway hiding in elephant grass. I and Nav. reported to base security next to Air Ops what we'd seen. Two Cobras were cranked up, straffed the area. Heard body count of 65 and taksan mortars and rockets found in grass. Saved the day, and probably many aircraft. Good mission. Have since found Billy O'Neal of Mississippi. He was another 292, a TSGT that got to MSgt while there. He flew many missions. Gnd duties included Awards and Decs and crew scheduling. Good Man, good job.
