Received from, Eddie Rogerson

Eddie was a Flight Mechanic with the 361st Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron at Nha Trang in 1966/67. Eddie also assisted our Mail Clerk Ken Evans in the Mail room when not flying and shares with us something that I was not aware of about Ken. Read his story below.

"Ken Evans and I met when we volunteered for the Phyllis Ann project as Flt. Mechs. in early 1966. We went through all the training together and became very close friends. During this time I found through other sources that Ken had a very slow progressing terminal illness and was slowly losing his sight as a result. When I asked Ken about this, he said it was true and asked me to keep it to myself as he wanted to complete his tour and not be treated differently from anyone else. Shortly after we arrived, the Flight Surgeon grounded Ken because of his sight and was preparing to send him back to the states. Ken was very adamant about being aloud to complete his tour. He discussed it with I believe Col. Casey who created the mail room position so he could. I worked with him in the mail room when I was not flying as his assistant. Ken memorized every person in the squadron and would painstakingly hold each letter a few inches from his face and insure it was properly delivered on time. What very few letters he could not make out he would leave for me. Ken was very committed if he could not fly, he would stay and do all he could to support those who could.

I talked to Ken in 1968. He seem to be doing well, though you could tell time was taking its toll. I tried to locate him in the mid seventies and could not find him, later I herd he had passed away. I believe his family may still be in the Sacramento area and have sent out feelers, so fare with no results."

While Ken and I were best of friends and room mates at Number 2 Mei Lein, and I knew he had arrived as a Flight Mechanic but was assigned as Unit Mail Clerk. I never questioned him as to why he was not flying as it was not my business, only curiosity. We never touched on the subject and I now know the story and my curiosity has been satisfied with a great and understandable reason thanks to Eddie.

Ken has previously listed among "Ours Gone". He passed away on July 29th, 1973 just 6 years after returning home from Vietnam. J.C.

Received from Larry Eshleman, Winter Park, Florida.

Larry says, I'm , Larry Eshleman, Major, USAF (Ret), the guy who passed your site to COL Bruce Hunt, whom I knew during the many years we lived in Hawaii. I spent 28 years in the USAF; 13 enlisted and 15 commissioned. All were in intel; the first 13 in USAFSS as a Chinese and Vietnamese linguist, the rest as an intel officer specializing in Asia.

In 1962-62, as an A1C Vietnamese linguist, I was a backender on an EC-47 on TDY from Osan AB to fly hearability missions out of Tan Son Nhut and Da Nang ABs, the forerunner of the TEWS and 6994th programs. I don't have my log any more, but I think I still have my A.O.s, if they would be of use. I went on to fly RC-130Bs (out of Yokota AB) in the Commando Lance program in 66-67 and RC-135Ms in the Combat Apple Program, 67 thru 70, out of Kadena AB.

I was commissioned thru BCP in 71 and retired at Hickam AB in 86. From 1987-2003, I worked at HQ USARPAC, Ft Shafter, HI in the G2 (11 years) and G5 (5 years). I'm now retired in Winter Park, FL.

Is the reunion for 2005 in DC open to your "ancestors"? If so, please send me the details.

Received from, Bruce E. Hunt, Hawaii.

My tour in Vietnam started in June 1967 at Pleiku as a crew member in the 360th TEWS for three months and then I was assigned as squadron commander of the 361st TEWS at Nha Trang for the next 9 months. While there I had some of my guys put together a year book. It has many photographs and anecdotes which would be of interest to you. (This yearbook is on the site) Unfortunately, since I now live in Hawaii, I cannot attend the 2005 Reunion.
