Received from,Pete Strand, Uncasville, Connecticut.
Pete Says he was a Co-Pilot with the 361st TEWS, 362nd TEWS, Det 1, Danang and Ubon in 1973. I arived at DaNang the day after the 8th TFW bombed the POL dump in early Jan '73. That day I learned how to eat lunch while laying on the floor listening to the music of Giant Voice . Had each of the first 3 planes I was scheduled to fly hit by rockets while I was in Intel briefings the day of the scheduled flights. Answered the phone as Duty Officer and heard the sad news from NKP about Baron 52 overdue. Was "The Country Store" flying the base flight VC-47, 111, around to for everything from beer by the pallet, food, Swisher Sweets cigars, Vietnamese bands and the payroll. Got one of the last haircuts the O-Club Barber gave before he got blown up by a Claymore while trying to penetrate the flightline. Paid the maids what they were due when "Numba 10 G.I." left and owed them for maid service as the 361st was being disbanded. Left DaNang on March 29, the day before the final pullout. Flew old 111 to Clark for "Flyable Storage" and saw the returning POWs from a distance. Finished tour at Ubon living in the non air conditioned Bordin Hotel for 5 months. Landed only once in Cambodia (OV-10). Rode with Bruce Obeymeyer to PiBoon 35 miles in the country. Fond memories of a great airplane, great people, and the resiliance and determination of the human spirit. The decades have enhanced the memories of some of you to legendary status. Received from,Steve B. Scheffrin.
Steve says I served in NKP RTAFB assigned to the 56 AMS and TDY at Ubon RTAFB with the 56 SOW-FOL supporting the 361 TEWS in 1973-1974. I worked on 56 SOW EC-47's (as well as OV-10's, CH-53's, C-47A's, C-118's, and T-39's) in the comm-nav maintenance career field, and I saw your web-site. I am retired from the Air Force Reserve, and I presently work for the Air Force as a civilian at Los Angeles AFB and serve in the California State Guard as a Warrant Officer 1. In recent years I have gained an appreciation for the history that I played a small part in. If there is an association for old EC-47 mechanics from southeast asia I would really be interested. Thanks, Steve Scheffrin Steves' Email Address: [email protected]

Received from, Jim Barnette.
Hi, Jim was a Bendix Tech Rep., at Nha Trang, Sept. 66 to June, 67. Please put me on your mailing list. I intend to go to the 2005 reunion. I remember Col. Hinkle, Hap and Bob Harris, very well. I flew one and maybe two missions with them. Wish I had kept my flight log book, signed by each A/C commander for that flight. Still have some 8MM movies of some flights. Have a photo of me standing under the nose of a "gooney bird" with Snoopy painted on the nose. I'm sure you remember that aircraft. I really enjoyed Nha Trang. Remember Col Casey very well. Do you remember Major Ayala? I flew with him several times. Whenever his pilot would come back to the mid part of the plane for his meal, I would go up and sit in his seat. Major Ayala would let me fly the plane. So many good memories of the people I was associated with. Best regards, Jim Barnette Jim's Email Address: [email protected]

Fred said, I Served at Pleiku Air Base as Intelligence Officer from Sept 1969 to May 1970, when the squadron moved to Da Nang. Left country in Sept, 1970. Many rated junior officers had additional duty as flight briefing officers. At Da Nang, when briefings were finished by late morning, we would hitch rides on army 2 1/2 ton trucks to the officer's club at the in-country R&R center. The squadron published a yearbook, "The Longest Year"; I have one copy. Twelve years ago I sent a copy to the family of Mike Wall in Houston, MS, who was killed when his plane was shot down in March, 1970. Received from, David L. Hardesty, Ft. Worth, Texas.
David was a Captain and a Co-Pilot with the 362st Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron at Pleiku in 1966/67, ( the early group ). Aircraft Commander was Major Loren Hauser - Navigator was Capt. David ? - Crew Chief was Mike ? - The whole crew was initially stationed at Tan Son Nhut in the 360 TEWS and transfered to Pleiku to the 362 TEWS under the command of LtCol. Crook (1966-67). After LtCol Crooks departure, LtCol. Allison took command and was soon promoted to Col. Our entire tour, as far as I am aware, was completely uneventful. I did fly my last mission on Friday the 13th north of the DMZ however. After my return to the States, I was hired by Delta Air Lines and flew for them for 30 years. I retired in 1999 as a Captain on the Boeing 767. David's Email Address is: [email protected] Postal Address is: 7120 Rufe Snow Drive #106, Ft. Worth, TX 76148-1867 Phone: 817-498-2756

Received from, David B. Ross, Kilgore, Texas.
David writes he was a Morse Intercept operator at the 'X' and 'Y' positions and served at Danang, June, 1971 to Jume, 72 with the 6994th Security Squadron. Those of us who were cigarette smokers in DaNang were in bad trouble around 1971-1972. Why? Our friendly Navy buddies would dock in DaNang with supplies which included Marlboro, Winston, Camel, and all of the major brands of cigarettes. By the time they filtered there way through the black market and through the streets of downtown DaNang, we were left with Kent and Kool cigarettes and that was all. Instead of paying $.14 for a pack of cigarettes, you were paying your mama-san $1.00 for a pack of the major brands which she would bring you the next day from down-town. We couldn't get off base (except to be bused to China beach)which made it more frustrating. While on a mission over Laos, we got to land and stay in NKP, Thailand. This was a mission that people fought over due to getting out on the town for a brief period. You would land in the evening and then take off around 4-5 a.m. the next morning and work the area on the way back. While on that mission, our crew got a brainstorm. We went to the Base store in NKP and purchased at least 6 cases of name brand cigarettes and brought them back. This started a trend with the other crews on the same mission. So, this settled our cigarette problem. By the way, we didn't make a profit at all. We sold them out of the barracks for the same price we had paid. Thanks.
