Received 22 November, 2004 from, Frank Walker, Universal City, Texas

Frank says, 'I was in the 360th TEWS from March '67 to March '68. Also served two months TDY at Phu Bai. I was suppose to go on the C-123s but was instead assigned to the 360th. I was one HAPPY person when this happened. I worked in C-123 docks at Clark AB in '65 followed by a year on C-47s at Randolph AFB. So, I was very familiar with both aircraft and I sure loved the old "Goony Bird". I am a member of this site. I'm disabled so don't see any way of being able to make the reunion but I do have friends who are planning on being there.

Because of you and this site, I am now in contact with 5 old friends and brothers so far who I served with in South Vietnam. Thanks just does'nt seem strong enough. True heart felt thanks indeed sir. As noted. These friends are all thanks to you and this site.

Received from, Wayne Gamble, Ovied Florida

Wayne left this in the Guestbook. I was assigned to the 361st Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron in 1969-70 at Phu Cat as an Instructor Pilot, Flight Examineer. Hope to make reunion 2002. Like to hear from other 361st folks from 1969-70.

Received from, Reinhard O'Neill 'George', Chantilly, Virginia

Reinhard left this in the guestbook. I was assigned to the 360th Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron at Tan Son Nhut as a Pilot/Instructor Pilot in 1970/71. Also flew out of the detachment at NKP Thailand.

Great to see this site and I hope to attend reunion 2002.

January 28th, 2002, George added this. George writes, As best as I can recollect from an old Flight Log book, since I can't seem to find my old military files: I started flying on March 29th, 1971 out of Tan Son Nhut AB, Saigon, with the 360th TEWS for 4 months and then transferred to NKP, Thailand on June 21, 1971 for an extended tour until October 1, 1972.

I completed 239 combat missions without an accident or incident during my tour. I feel very grateful and lucky for that achievement as well as the many "backenders" that flew with me on all those missions. I still keep in touch with two of my crewmembers, Capt. Pete Schwartz, and Capt. Victor Albertini both navigators. Pete was the one who alerted me to this wonderful Webpage.

I have many photos of my tour in which some are turning pink in color from aging. I hope to have some scans of these photos for the Webpage in the near future. I remember the many trips to downtown NKP on the "Baht Bus" to visit the many cultural sites of this port city such as bars, massage parlors, hotels, Chinese movie theaters, and tailor shops.

The only thing safe to drink while you were downtown was Singha beer if you didn't want mild form of cholera to attack you. The weather was nice during the dry season, but fungus growing on your flight suit during the Monsoon season was not pleasant and made flying treacherous. I remember flying through thunderstorms with Lt. Cory Esposito on a dare just to see if the gooney bird could handle "rough" weather. It did but I wouldn't do it again with the tremendous up and down drafts we encountered.

Received from, Kent Thomas, El Dorado, Arkansas

Kent says, My tour began in 1969 and ended in 1971. I went to NKP on a 90 day TDY to start up Detachment 3, 6994th Security Squadron. Was first Analyst to fly during this phase although years earlier there had been many others, at one time I was the only one. The Program later spread to other units. Changed status to PCS and left in Feburary 1971 after 185 missions.

Received from, James R. Abernathy Kingston, Oklahoma

James says he was assigned to the 6994th Security Squadron at Tan Son Nhut from March 1968 to Feburary 1969 as a Radio Operator. Would like to hear from others that were at TSN at the same time as he.

Received this today March 26, 2002, from James's daughter Bonnie.

Thought that I might tell you a little of me experience. While in Tech School at Keesler AFB Biloxi, Mississippi in 1966 I volunteered for a tour in Korea. At that time there was no upgrading in Korea for below E-5. I spent one tour there. After getting my orders to be sent back to Tinker AFB Oklahoma, I talked to my flight commander about getting out of these orders, for I would have had to start my time in grade all over. Here I already had more than 13 months as a 2 Striper. My flight commander, a SGT. David, not sure if he is the same one mentioned in your book or not. He sent me to our NCOIC who told me to volunteer for Vietnam, I would probably get it.

Sure enough I got my orders for Vietnam but first I would have to attend schools in the states. My first school was for ARDF Training at Goodfellow AFB San Angelo, TX. As I stated earlier I was only a 2 Striper the rest of the guys in my class were A1C (Buck SGT's) or SSGT's. I sure got some strange looks going into the NCO Club at Goodfellow with the rest of the class. For TDY personnel could use the NCO Club.

After this school I went to Fairchild AFB Wash. For survival school. This was in November or December of 1967, good place to go to get ready for Saigon, Vietnam. In your book you noted you missed Fairchild. All I can say is Lucky You.

After finishing survival school I came home on leave. Afterward I had to stop in the Philippine's for Jungle Survival school. While there TET broke out so I was stranded. Finally got to Vietnam, about 2 months later I was promoted to A1C (Buck SGT), spent my whole tour at Tan Son Nhut. Really enjoyed my experience there. Did not get to know many of the front end crew for we flew with different crews daily. But they all seemed like a great bunch of guys.

While there I was awarded the air medal with 4 clusters & the DFC. One of the first planes that I remember seeing was Balls Niner (009), from what I remember it stayed grounded most of my tour. Not many wanted to fly on her for she had a very bad reputation of break downs. When I left Vietnam I was stationed at Goodfellow AFB Texas with "The Fightin 48" as we were known. This was in 1969.

In June & July a group of us were sent to Manchester, New Hampshire to test out a C-47 headed for Vietnam. It was supposed to have better DF equipment than previous ones. I never knew if the plane made it to Nam or not.

Again in October of 1969 I went back to Manchester to test out another plane. I am not sure what type of plane it was, it had a tripod landing gear & 4 engines, was supposed to be able for High altitude DF. Had to leave this program early to get back to Goodfellow to be discharged.

Have not heard much from any of the people I served with. But was finally glad to see information in the VFW magazine. I am glad that we can now be able to tell a little of our jobs in Nam.

I bought your book last year and really enjoyed it. My family read it to see what i did in the war. I have one photo of an EC-47 in flight that i took from the 47 i was on. I have it framed on my wall and it brings back many happy and unhappy memories. I was talking to the crew when they crashed into the mountains out of Phu Cat in 1970. That was a sad time for us all. Keep up the good work.

Having just stumbled onto your site last week, I have not as yet viewed all of the goodies on your site but wanted to get signed into your log. Will get back to you at a later date with more info about me and my memories. You have done an outstanding job with this web site. I get frustrated because I don't have the time to sit down and really peruse your site. Got to go for now.
