Received from Robert D. Dutton of West Linn, Oregon.
Robert writes, I was assigned to the 6994th Security Squadron at Tan Son Nhut in 1968/69 as an Airborne Radio Intercept Operator. Previously in 1962 I was sent TDY with two others from Okinawa to Bien Hoa, thirty miles north of Saigon, to explore the possibility of conducting Airborne Interception Missions, etc, against the VC. We were supported by the 1st Air Commando's and their C-47's also based at Bien Hoa. This was all done at the personal direction of Gen. Curtis Lemay. It was also under his direction that his personal HAM Radio equipment (SP-600's) were to be used in the effort. All the equipment we used was labeled "from Gen. Lemay's basement" in grease pencil. Needless to say we proved the feasability of the operation and in 1964 the first unit was activated and operational. I returned in 1968 for a tour. I consider it my most memorable and satisfying tour of my 20 years.

Received from, Larry Koser, Houston Texas.
Larry writes, I was in Det 2, 6994 based in Pleiku in 1967-1968. I was a 292X1 (ditty bopper). The most vivid memory(ies) I have are: (1) Flying on ole "102" painted "Go-Go Girl" on the nose. (2) Flying a night mission that our TSgt "volunteered" us for in which we were looking for an NVA unit that the ground forces had lost track of. Coincidently, that mission was during Tet, and man the whole sky lit up when we tried to land at Pleiku. First, just plain old fireworks--but then--rockets and mortars galore! It's finally good to see a site that deals with what we did over there. We were in relative obscurity for so long. Thanks for a great web-site. Larry's Email Address is: lake45s(at)isp.com |
Received from, Jerry D. Nease, Sneedville, Tenn.
Jerry left this in the Guestbook. I served with the 6994th Security Squadron in Bravo Maintenance and as Cat IV Inspector. Served at Phu Cat and Tan Son Nhut. Glad to find this site. Looking for some memories from the EC-47's and great crews from both ends. Received this on December 6th, 2002. I just received info about your site a couple of days ago from Yahoo Clubs USAFSS. What a shock to see the EC-47's and your web site. I was at Phu Cat (6994 SS) and flew as Brovo Maintenance in 1970 until the base was closed and moved to Saigon. I flew out of Saigon until my departure to Elmendorf AFB, Alaska in June '72. I was a TSgt in charge of the night shift for the AL-34-35&38 equiptment and CAT IV standards inspector for Bravo Maintenance at all sites. If we could not duplicate a problem or find a true fix on the ground I would be in the air on the next mission and make sure the mission was completed. What a great group of men that made those missions a success. All were Airmen with a mission and determined to do all they could to make it a success. Most of the EC-47's were older than the crews on board and I can still hear the sound of those R-1830's or R-2000's today. We have one in Morristown Tennessee and it flies over my home and I just stop work, look and listen, what a great bird. I have some slides from the late 70's to mid '72 and will try to dig them out and send them to you. I am in the process of building a house and have them in storage but will get them to you as soon as I can. I remember one tail number at Phu Cat (046) had a problem with the C-12 Nav/Compass System and became the Hanger Queen. She would not pass the Compass Swing and the back end equipment would not give proper plots. She made many runs to Hong Kong etc. Keep up the great work and have a great day.
