Jim writes, I served as Chief of Maintenance - 6994 SS, Oct 67- Feb 68. Avionics Maint Officer - Det 2, 6994 SS, Feb -Oct 68. Responsible for maintenance of backend classified equipment. Assisted with crash damage recovery of an EC-47 that was downed in Thailand (I think in Feb 68). Went TDY to NKP to retrieve classified equipment. I am still amazed at the expenditure of funds to install a swimming pool at Pleiku in the middle of a war zone - a location that was rocketed almost nightly. The only thing I recall about the pool was the floating red "gel" from the dust that settled on the water. Another fond memory was the films and popcorn available in the bunkers during rocket attacks. Above all, the mission was among the best I was associated with during my 28 years in the Air Force - even along side the subsequent assignment to the SR-71/TR-1/U-2 operational mission for four years at Beale AFB, CA. The 6994 and Vietnam, in general, was a real trip!!!! |

Jim writes, A few months after arriving at Pleiku and the 362nd Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron. The squadron was transferred to Danang, so I got to sample both the highlands and the coast. The highlands were better. Rodger Curnow turned me on to this site and I want to thank you for your work in keeping it going. Hope I can make one of the upcoming reunions. |

Herbert writes, I served as a Radio Operator with the Det. 2, 6994th Security Squadron at Pleiku in 1966/67. I was one of the first to serve at Det 2 Pleiku. When we first arrived our planes had not so we did all sort of things to get our compound up and running, painting, etc. Some of our members even went up with the helicopter gunships. But our "goonies" finally got there and we flew every other day and usually flew seven hour missions. I had about 107 missions and about 762 hours when I left in Oct 67. Our planes were also designated as RC-47's. The one thing I've noticed on the interior shots concerns the 'Y' operator console. Our 'Y' operator actually typed what the 'X' operator was locked on to. And the base at Pleiku really changed a lot. Trying to locate my pictures and will send them to you. I know I have some good pictures of our planes , one of which shows surrender leaflets being dropped. Will pass them on when found. |

Received from Neil Soloman
I was on the activation team with (then major) Bill Ballard. We landed at Tan Son Nhut around April 14, 1966, on a 59 day TDY from the 6922 SW at Clark. We had a trailer in the 7th AF compound and worked closely with the ASA's 509th Radio Research Unit at Davis Station, to learn the ground aspect of things. I was a 202. Bill Sherman was a Vietnamese 203 and Gerald Scheutz was a cryptanalyst. Major Ballard headed up our team. There were a couple of Lts., one E-6 and an E-7. I put in a request to PCS to the 6994th, but already had been assigned to the 6924th, where I finished my four-plus years. Neil Solomon |

Received from William 'Dave' Claggett, Valdosta, Georgia.
Dave writes, I was a SSgt assigned to the 360th Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron at Tan Son Nhut as a Flight Mechanic in 1967/68. I had the dubious honor of being at TSN during the TET Offensive, after which we used all the sand that had been trucked in to build sand bags for bunkers, 24 hour shifts. The majority of the bunkers had been torn down, the then 7th AD cmdr thought they were unsightly. I remember being duty driver and going downtown to pick up the officers to fly. A guard was killed at the Q next to ours, just before I arrived, and the guard at ours was wounded just after I left. All in all it was an eventful tour with lots of memories. Received from James L. "Jim" Clinton, Ormond Beach, Florida
Jim had found last years reunion notice in a back issue of the DAV Magazine and being the first time he had seen anything on the EC-47, he gave me a phone call. Jim sais he was a Pilot with the 361st Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron at Nha Trang from July 1968 until July 1969. We discussed a bit about the losses incurred by the EC-47 operation and he knew a number of the ones lost. Jim does not have an email address but expects to get a computer in future. I would bet that now that he knows of the web-site, he will advance the schedule some. Jims US Postal address is listed on The EC-47 Association Membership Listing elsewhere on this site. Received and added, June 8th, 2007. He graduated USAF undergraduate pilot training class, 68F, Del Rio, Texas, spring 1968. Checked out in EC47 at England AFB, LA. Attended PACAF Jungle Survival Training, Clark AFB, Philippines enroute Vietnam. Arrived 361TEWS, Nha Trang, July 1968 as copilot EC47. Checked out as aircraft commander, Spring 1969. Awarded DFC & PUC award. R & R Sydney, Australia 1968. R & R Hong Kong 1969. Rotated back to states summer 1969. Flew KC135 until separation in spring 1972. |
Received from, Ivan H. 'Jack' Haulsee, White Marsh, Maryland.
Jack sent the following information. I was MSgt with 2 tours, both with the 6994th Security Squadron at Tan Son Nhut. The first tour was from July 1966 to July 1967 an served as NCOIC Charlie Flight (we had 3 flights). The second was Jan. 1970 to Jan. 1971 and served as Chief Squadron SEFE. In addition to my tours I was ARDF Branch chief at the school at Goodfellow AFB from Aug 67-Jan 70 and from Aug 71-Jan 74. I was also involved with testing the "Q" systems "bit" mode at Sanders Associates in Manchester NH and Plattsburgh NY in the fall of 1967. Spent time in Dave Eddy`s office at USAFSS replotting the results of those tests. Another interesting thing. I had the priviledge of flying a ARDF mission as the operator on one of the Army birds. That was arranged by our CMSGT John Thompson who worked at ACC. Had a good mission that day and was very productive. Never will forget the change of command at the 360th in the early days. Seemed like some "antique" LtCol was always coming in who outranked the commander. Finally the 460th told LtCol Jim Jelley that he would be the commander of the 360th even though he would have others who "ranked" him. Remmember the back pack chutes you had to wear the whole mission long. I could go on and on but I`ll spare you at this time. I`m severly handicapped now and am on a walker and a wheelchair at times. This website occupies many hours for me. It can only get better as I learn more about this computer. I`ll be in touch and will put more of my two cents worth in as time passes. |
Received from Rich Chacon, San Jose, California.
My name is Rich Chacon, I was surfing the net and I found the EC47 website. I was at TSN from Jan. 1971 to Jan. 1972. I was a tech in the 6994 Security Squadron and maintained the specialized electronic equipment aboard the EC47. Tried to remember names but it has been 30 years, however, I do remember the shop and the red balls out on the flight line. There is alot that I didn't know but the website enlightened me. Anyway it's nice to know about the mission and the small part I played, makes me feel proud. I have pictures of the aircraft and I live in San Jose, CA. |

Recrived from Guy Plumley, Fulton, Illinois.
Guy writes, I was in NKP from 9/73 to 7/74. I was a 43151A, Aircraft Mechanic, assigned to the 56th OMS, 56th CSG/432ndCSG. When I first arrived I worked on several of the Generals aircraft and then was (due to Nixon holding up bringing people over) transfered to doing flightline maintenance on EC-47's (balls 9 great old bird) until I was sent TDY to Udorn to work on T-28 (Loas and Khmer trainers) for 3 months. Upon return the missions for the EC-47's were drawing to a close(got to see Skeeters last flight smoke trail) and all we did was run up the aircraft and make sure they were ready in case needed. Just prior to leaving (got out early I wanted to reup but the A.F. said I wasn't needed in my present career field and I did not want to be a cook or a cop I liked the old recip birds) I helped in getting some of the birds ready to be ferried to the Philipines. My qestion J.C. is what happend to the ole girls after they were ferried to the Philipines? I often wonder what the fate of these great pieces of history was. If you know please drop me a short note I would appreciate it. 73 Guy Plumley N9XBG |
