Received from: Clarence T. (Tom) Smith, Lindale, Texas
Tom left the following information in the guestbook. I was Stationed at Phu Cat with the 361st Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron. My Duty Title was Navigator, Scheduling Officer I was in Southeast Asia in 1969-1970 What a great site! You've done a terrific job. I found a guestbook entry by John Ekwall, one of our pilots at Phu Cat. And my own picture in the yearbook of the 361st, 1970-71, on page 29. But we hardly ever used that dart board in coming up with the flight schedule! Now, if only I could find Dave Sweet, Ken Lumry, Hugh Davidson, Ken McIlwain, Duke Wolf, Wayne Gamble, and some of the other great guys I served with, and ate with, and drank with, and played tennis with... What a time.. Would love to hear from crewmembers who flew at Phu Cat during 1970. Haven't searched the guestbook yet, but I intend to do it soon. Thanks for remembering and helping others remember. I flew 138 missions, and was on one of the first EC's to cross into Cambodia. Also tried to shoot down a weather balloon with six 38 calibre pistols! (We were asked to do it by ground controllers). Franks writes; I was a Captain and a Navigator with the 362nd Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron at Pleiku in 1966/67. We arrived in Saigon in Nov 66 after ferring and aaircraft from the States. Our crew was sent to Pleiku around the beginning of the new year. Col Crook was the commander. Our mission time was spent North to the DMZ and into Laos. We occassionly flew feet wet up the North Viet Nam coast. Paul Hughes was my A/C for the ferry trip over and for the first part of the year. I spent the last part of the tour as instructor and flight examiner. Funniest mission was on the SS guys laid on without any direction from HQ. They had been working a guy close to Pleiku and asked if we would try to locate him on a "maintenance" flight. We did and we cased a real bit of pot stirring when special ops guys complained about our exposing one of their undercover folks. Nice to see this on line. My son sent the url to me. |

Back at Hqs, I was put in charge of manpower requirements for the ARDF mission. I'd love to be contacted by anyone who was attached to the USAFSS mission anywhere, especially Osan AB in 1960, Vietnam during the 1969 - 1970 time frame, or Bremerhaven Germany during 1965 - 1968. Brad writes: Just wanted to congratulate you on a wonderful site. I served in SEA 6994th Det. 2, Danang, from 2/72 to 1/73 and Det 3, Ubon from 1/73 to 12/73. I was a Ditty Bopper, AMS & IRO at Danang and SEFE in Ubon. The memories flooded back seeing a lot of familiar names and events. I was flying on Aircraft 313 the day Baron 52 went down. The following day went stateside on a 30 day leave. My flight records are incomplete and I haven't located the picture of my fini-flight but I believe I had 307 missions. Looking for Jim Phillips who was from Frostproof Fla. Jim, Mark Broswick and I roomed together in Danang. I have contacted Mark and will talk with him later this month. Was saddened to hear about Paul Weydants death. Paul gave me my check flight for SEFE out of Ubon. I like many others really admired Paul. Would also like to get address and/or phone number for Ralph Jasper who I believe now resides in Biloxi, Miss. Would love to hear from any backenders who remember me. Once again thanks for all your efforts on creating this wonderful website. Brad Howell |
