Pleiku Photos

A nice set of photos of Pleiku

Thanks to Ed Benningfield

Picture taken May 1970. At that time, Pleiku was home to the 362 TEWS and Detachment 2 of the 6994 Security Squadron. Pleiku is located in the Central Highlands of Vietnam with an altitude of 1,500 to 2,000 feet (I'm guessing, it may have been higher?). Compare this altitude with the 5-20 feet above sea level at DaNang. The weather at Pleiku was generally cool and pleasant.
Picture taken May 1970. I'm not certain, but this may have been the recreation building with swimming pool out back?

Picture taken May 1970. This should be a familiar sight to anyone stationed at Pleiku. It shows one of the Det 2 Dorms/Barracks (I think), plus the outdoor movie screen. Good (or bad) movies were shown here most every night. The dinning hall is visible to the rear of the screen. The flight line plus TEWS and Det 2 operations were off to the right of the picture.

Picture taken July 1970. Taken from the Airmen/NCO Club and shows the Barracks with flight line in background. The 362 and Det 2 were relocated to DaNang at this time. How did I get back to Pleiku in July? Well, after returning from an afternoon mission to DaNang, the weather was bad and we were advised that there was a hour to hour and a half wait to land. The pilot advised that we did not have enough gas to stay up for another hour. The control tower inquired if we were declaring an emergency and the pilot responded "no, I just don't have enough gas to stay up here for another hour." Control tower advised us that our alternates were Phu Cat and Pleiku. The pilot opted for Pleiku since it was closer. We had to stay with the aircraft all night guarding our "mission bag" since there was not a secure area left at Pleiku following the move to DaNang. We took turns going to the club for dinner and I shot a few more pictures of the place.
