The old "Gooneybird" is one versatile aircraft. I was a gunner on the AC-130 "Spectre" Gunship, so I have alot of admiration for the old warbirds. The AC-47 "Spooky" is an atribute to what that airframe is capable of. God bless all who served. Take care. |

You guys have done an outstanding job. I was at Nha Trang, Det 1, 6994th Security Squadron, from summer of 1968 to summer of 1969. Went there from Fukuoka, Hakata Admin Annex, Japan. I was a 207X1 morse code type. After Nam went to Omaha to fly RC135s for all of 1970. Retired for the USAF in May 1981. I am looking forward to meeting you guys at the 2000 reunion. |

I followed Ernie Short as commander of Det 2, 6994 Security Sqdn at Pleiku AB, from 6/67 to 6/68. He left me a great outfit. My "longest year" was the best assignment I had in 20 yrs with USAF; no Captain could have asked for a better job. Learned lots the hard way; loved every minute of it. Tet '68 was the highlight. The USAFSS guys I was privileged to serve with were simply superb, and the "rocking chair Air Force" (362 TEWS) that flew us around was a great bunch of guys. |

I served with the 6994th SS as a ditty bopper in 1972. Myself, the first shirt, sqd cmdr and one other were the last 4 to leave. We closed the Squadron down. Don't remember to many names but I remember the events and faces of those I served with. GREAT bunch of people. I remember when I first arrived and was paired with a black Msgt for my OJT and checkout. I was really apprehensive and he did a great job of getting me into the groove. My roomate and best bud was Gary Williams from W. Virginia (did you ever get rehydrated and how many bam bi baa stands were on base?) Remember the mascot "Charlie"? Sit up, shake, give me 5. Remember those night missions where we played target practice on final approach with ARVN on the ground. We were the targets. They were either very good to get the rounds that close or we were very lucky. Many good memories but they didn't seem so good at the time. Take care and again thanx.......... |

I was in the 361TEWS between dec 72 thru Dec 73. First at Da Nang and then on to N.K.P. I can't ever remember worrying about not leaving there. All the crews were good friends and we looked after each other. That was at work and at play. I enjoyed the job because it seemed we were doing something really constructive and we were able to follow the task at it went down. I was a bit worried about the fact that I was into my 17th year in the Air Force when I went and thought it would be just my luck to not make it out of there. I returned to England for my last tour and retired here in 1976. I have been here since that date and am three year from retiring from work all together. I have read almost all of your Web Site and return it when I get a few minutes in case I missed something. Keep up the good work and pass on to anyone who want to, to give me a call. J.A.K. |

When I got orders for Viet Nam, they were for the 6924th Security Sqdn at Da Nang. My other friends were selected for the EC-47's and we went to Viet Nam at about the same time. One of my buddies Sgt. Larry E. Pulley, RO on the EC-47 # 43-4957 was one of the crewmembers when it ditched in the Mun River in Thailand - June, 1969. At the time in Da Nang, some members of the 24th had just returned from a 6 week temporary assignment at Clark, as the April 29th Ordinance Depot Explosion took out the Operation Center of the 6924th. We returned to operate out of mobile vans. I had heard from someone that Larry had been on board when it crashed in the Mun River, however I never knew about the outcome. Glad to hear that they were rescued. I have always been proud of my Service, although I reget that I never had the honor of serving aboard the EC-47's. GREAT WEB SITE - Hope to see one of the 6924th at Da Nang. God Speed and God Bless. |

(July 71 thru May 72.) Air evacuated out to Lackland AFB (Wilford Hall Med center) May 21, 1972 for removal of a tumor embedded in my left parotid gland behind the ear. Thank the Lord it was non-malignant. It did get me out of Saigon 45 days early. Dave Eddy was my Operations Officer and he had been selected to replace me and was home on his 30 day leave for the 6 month extension and was recalled early to replace me. I owe David for that. We closed the Det at Phu Cat (spelling?) while I was commander. After I was discharged from Willford Hall Medical Center we went to Rhein Main AB, Germany where I was the Commander of the 6916th Security Squadron (RC-130) backenders. Then to Athens, Greece where I relocated my squadron where I had only a Detachment before. (Converted to RC-135's)and went on to be Commander of 6944th SW (Offutt AFB) where we flew missions out of Athens, Mildenhall, Kadena, Eielson AFB, Alaska and a southern mission out of Offutt. Good assignments and great mission, but the EC47's remain in my heart as I flew as Aircraft Commander with the "Front-end" squadron out of Tan Son Nhut (67 missions). |

Serving with the 6994th in Vietnam from May 69 to May 70 was an experience that I will never forget. However, after reading all if the EC47 site material I find that one group of highly motivated and dedicated 6994th people have not been mentioned, the Airborne Maintenance personnel. Our mission was to maintain all of the Security Services electronic equipment. The shop a Tan Son Nhut ran 24 hours a day seven days a week. Maintenance personnel were required to work 12 hour days/six days a week. Like my 6994th brothers, we flew many combat missions supporting the Security Service's role. So dont forget us when telling the Backend Crew history. |

Those who read this and the EC47 history site can somehow realize the true effort we did over there. It was not about right or wrong, but how we dedicated ourselves to do a job. A job that very few knew existed. I was a "backender" 203 linguist, one tour of duty like many of the TEWS and 6994th airmen did. Though it was over 30 years ago, the memory remains constant. We had a reunion last Memorial Day (May 1999) and it being my first ever, it was quite emotional. Even more emotional is the fact that since that reunion, we have lost 3 members in the past 2 months. The 94th and the TEWs squardrons were silent warriors....the EC47 history site tells our story. Thanks for listening. Doug |

I was at Danang with the 6924th in 65-66 and went back and served with the 6994th at TSN/NKP in 72-73. I worked with the ACC at MACV HQ with Stoney, Joe Mudd, Willie Irizarry, Joe Dykes, etc..... Have lost touch with most of the people I knew there and would like to hear from them (not just the ACC'ers, but the backenders too). After I retired from the AF in 79, I went to school for 3 years and the worked for NSA until my retirement in Dec 98. I was still in Saigon, waiting for clearance to go to NKP, when Baron 52 was downed. We finally made it to NKP Feb 10th, in time for the memorial services at the base chapel. I did not know Dale, Todd, Pete or Joe personally but we had a lot of mutual friends (to include Ron Myott and Ron Schofield). I continue to wear a POW/MIA bracelet with Todd Melton's name on it. The reason I am signing the guestbook is that I am looking for information. My son-in-law is an artist and I am trying to get him to do a picture for me in memory of Baron-52's backenders. My initial idea is to have a centralized picture of a camouflaged EC-47 and surround it with other bits of information. My one question is, I understand that the serial number of the aircraft was 43-48636 and am I correct in assuming that the last three digits were the ones that appeared on the tail of the aircraft????? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. When/if the project is ever completed, I will get a picture of the final work and scan it into your website to be included in with the memorabilia, if you think it is appropriate. Thanks and take care. We seem to be fading into the past, I will turn the BIG 60 this year!!!!! This is a great website that brings back a lot of memories (mostly good ones). CUL8R Al Forbes |

Name: Lester C Layman Jr Website: Referred by: Net Search From: San Antonio, TX Time: 2000-05-16 02:47:00 Comments: I was assigned to Det 1, 460th, TSN in Apr 66 to be the first 1st Sgt of the 360th Recon Sq from May 66 to Apr 67(Later it bcame TEWS). We were given barracks space in the "800" Area - next to the flight line area where helicopters used to land with wounded crew members or "pickups"for immediate transfer to the local 92d military hosp. The 2 story barracks were designed for 50-60 men - we had 40 to a floor and sometimes more. Memories include getting beds and mattresses from the old French Theater off of Lei Tai Do (first right after 100 "pee" alley as it was commonly called), and the wall lockers were at various Army "Dumps" around Saigon (those "mothers" came in two boxes (box 2 contained all the screws, nuts and bolts, keys and drawers) and weighed a "ton." We set up a production line on the barracks floors and had "specialists" working on each part of the locker - No aircraft (other than the 2 Det 1 Drill Press EC-47s) so the maintenance guys had nothing to do. The latrine area for 8 barracks had 10 showers, 14 sinks, 6 toilets - all for 640 enlisted plus!! Water would go off for days at a time and you had to find secret places to "do your business" (I had a key to the bathroom in the Hq460th Bldg). You could always tell a new guy in the showers - he would lather his whole body with soap!! We later would use the latrines of the 460th CES - they had hotwater ande allowed us to use their facilities from 1am to 5 am. When the acft started arriving, we got their landing times in the clear from the PI - then met them with cab trucks to take them to the parking area. Jim Jelley and I hunted for hotels to bed down the officers arriving - found one being built just outside the main gate on Lei Tai Do and Col Jelley worked with procurement to line it up to be the 360th Officer Qtrs. We had "Nung" guards on top of the hotel all night to protect the facility. Their furniture (chairs, desks etc, were made for "little people" and didn't hold up very well. Of more interest was the fact that the Secty of Defense said we had no 50 yr old pilots in "Nam - We had 4 of them in the 360th. Our Ops, Maintenance and Orderly room were on the active taxiway and we used to have A1Es turn around on the PSP in front of the buildings. Our latrin facilities consisted of outhouses set over a ditch adjacent to the Ops Bldg. We got toilet seats from Supply and put them over the round holes to give everyone that "hometown" feeling!! You have a great site and I could go on and on about the bedding down of the 360th, briefing incoming crews, sending crews to set up the 361st and 362d, etc. Only E-5s and below could eat in the Mess Hall and the NCO Club would take you hrs standing in line to eat, so We used to eat over at the USAFSS area (they had a club set up and the best food on TSN!) I ended my career as the Exec to the DC/Intel in USAFE - retired in 1977 and went to work for the 7113th SAS in Weisbaden. Would enjoy hearing from old original 360th folks. Some belong to the TSN organization. |

In October 1972, I was given the choice to fly the Electric Goon at Danang, RVN, or be sent to the 6908th Security Squadron at NKP, Thailand. I'm happy to say that I chose the Det 2, 6994th SS (and later transferred to Det 3, 6994th SS, Ubon RTAFB, Thailand. Over the past twenty-five plus years, I have given serious thought to my role in this unit. Every day, my memories give rise to the pride and honor felt as a result of my participation with this unit. I have a display of my awards and decorations resulting from this participation. At the top of the display is a picture of me in my flight suit in front of the tail section of one of the EC-47's at Ubon. Below it is my Combat Crewmember Wings, which I feel great honor to have earned. I feel a part of history. May each person who participated in this unit also feel he is a part of a unit which "flew unarmed and alone" and contributed his own part to this mission. Jerry Dennis |

Sometime in 1964 or 1965 I was in the 4440th Aircraft Deliver Group, Detachment 6, Chateauroux, France and one of the projects we had was getting the C-47 from the States to Vietnam. This was all classified at the time and we had to provide the crews with all the info they would need to get to Vietnam. Get security for the C-47s and the routes they were going to be flying. There are many duties involved on this project but some of the highlights was knowing it had to be done. I don't remember how many we took this way but 23 sticks in my mind, I know there were more than that. |

However, when we checked in with the 360th on our way through, they decided they could use two 2LT pilots so we went no futher. Actually, they needed a LT to give Lady Sux her baths. My wife is in the AF historian course at Maxwell. I asked her to check the AF Archives for info on the 360th. She found your site. A great site it is. Thanks so much for putting the site together. It was great to turn through the guessbooks and see the names of guys you flew with. I am currently TDY at Kirtland. As soon as I get home,I will e-mail my pictures from TSN. I noticed in one set of pictures of 360 aircraft that the black belly C-47 was refered to as an administative aircraft. Actually,it was the "b.s. bomber" that was moved down from Phu Cat. Many may remember hearing this aircraft playing "ice cream man" music as it taxied in. Also the white top Scatback C-47 can be seen in the background. |
