Comments: I was looking up some POW/MIA information and remembered that my father Robert M. Harris was trying years ago to remember the names of crewmen lost on another bird in his squadron "610 TEWS" I searched "antique Airlines" and found you. This is a very good web page with a lot of great info and pictures. Thank you very much! NOTE: From J.C. Patrick was not aware of it I don't think when he made this entry, but I immediately sent him an Email informing him that his dad, Robert M. Harris was MY NAVIGATOR in the 361st TEWS. His dad and I keep in touch and were at the reunion 99. Also sent him a complimentary copy of the book "The EC-47 Experience". J.C. Wheeler Aim High! Tech Sergeant Patrick M. Comments: I recently connected with a former serviceman who had served in the same area as I, and had gone through the same radio school (Keesler AFB), so we had something in common. This was in 1955. He went on to serve in the viet Nam era, and told me about this experience. It is very moving. Thank you for allowing me to sign in as a guest. WB6VAF

Comments: I was given this site by a fellow USAFSS guy I work with named Ken Stengle. I never had flying status as Ken did, but I logged quite a few hours with the 6929th RSM in Osan as a 292(59-61). The picture of the Hammerlund R390 brought a big lump in my throat when I thought of all the great people I worked with at that time. I also remember the radio we used alongside the R390 was a Collins SP-600. (Haven't thought of those numbers in close to 40 years.) I continued on over to the 6918th RSM at Brady AB from 61-63. I keep in touch with a guy name Bob Kincaid, who also served at Brady and lives in Pasedena. I carry a moneyclip with the UASFSS emblem at the time(60) to this day. Great website. I haven't had a chance to see all of it yet, but I will, for sure.

Comments: Never thought I'd find anyone out there who even knew what a Gooney-Bird was! I was an Aircraft electrician in the Air Force from 1966 to 1970. From 67 to 69 Iwas assigned to the 4412 CCTS at England AFB La. We had appx 20 or 25 C47's assigned to our Sqdn for the purpose of training Combat crews for duty in S.E.A.Among those A/C were the only three AC47's in the States. [Tail #'s 966, 416, and 263] From Jun 69 thru Jun 70 I was at NKP RTAFB working on the EC 47. My father was the flight mechanic on the first C47 to land in Japan after the surrender WWII. Can't seem to shake those Gooney's from my life!

Comments: I was at Phu Cat and Danang in Field Maint. I worked on all the airplanes on the bases as an airframe structural repairman. I enjoyed working on the Electric Goons. They were old and well used, but pretty reliable. I wrote a magazine article a few years ago about the rocket attack that destroyed 102. After it was published I received notes from a couple of other guys who were there. I really like your site.

Comments: Served with the 6994th at NKP and finally at Ubon from 73-74. Seeing names like Skeeter Dickerson and numbers like balls 9 "009" brought back a lot of good memories. I was there when the squadron closed and was surpried to see myself in some of the pictures of that day (part of the 304 crew). Strangely enough I finished my military career as a Supply Officer in the Navy and retired in 1993. Thanks for the web-site.

ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT DURING TIMES OF CONFLICT THE DIPLOMATS MAY NEGOTIATE, OUR FACTORIES CAN PRODUCE OUR WEAPONS AND THE GENERALS CAN COMMAND,BUT IN THE FINAL ANALYIS IT IS THE MEN & WOMEN OUT ON THE PERIMETERS ALL OVER THE WORLD WHO ARE LAYING THIER LIVES ON THE LINE TO PROTECT OUR FREEDOMS.WHEN IT COMES TIME TO SELECT A MAN OF THIS CENTURY, PERHAPS THE FRONT COVER OF TIME MAGAZINE SHOULD JUST READ "OUR VETERANS" TO EVERY ONE WHO SERVED IN VIETNAM TAKE TIME TO REMEMBER ALL OF OUR VETERANS TODAY. Comments: Great Site! My particulars: AFSC 292 in Japan, '66~'68. Then, Fairchild AFB Survival School, Eqmt Tech school at Goodfellow AFB March ? '68, Jungle Survival Clark AB, Philpp., Tan Son Nhut May '68~Jan'69, Pleiku Jan. 69~May'69. 133 EC-47 missions -- saw many of the planes I flew on. Was at Pleiku on Feb 5 69, when we lost the gooney with Rodney Gott and James "Dot" Dorsey (ROs). Although plane was lost in the morning, it wasn't 'til very late afternoon before we in the brks. knew about it. I was pulling the overnight CQ at the Ops bldg and answered the phone when Rodney's family called from the States to see if we'd heard anything. No, we hadn't at that point...tough call to take. I saw and spoke to his mother at the dedication of the chow hall in his name across from (now) AIA at Kelly AFB, San Antonio. Do any of these names ring a bell to anyone: Jim Osbourne, Bill? Lowmueller, Ed Sumner, Al Kinter, Bill Duffy {prob. was in Thailand}, Larry F., "Banger" the puppy? Hurry, I'll only be at this e-mail 'til end of year. Tks agn for the great site.

Comments: I served in the 6994th all over Southeast Asia (Detachments in Thailand and Vietnam) between April, 1967 and July, 1969. I flew as a RO on EC-47's out of Nha Trang and Pleiku from July, 1968 - July, 1969. This is a great page. It is a treasure of information. It's about time that the world was told about the importance of our mission in the war. However, I remember my experience to be a little more ethnically diverse than your page portrays. The air crews in Nha Trang and Pleiku were made up of a cross-section of America's sub-cultures. On first blush, the pictures on your page might make people think differently. Please seek to expand your page so that it does not seem to deny by default the African-American (which I am), Hispanic and Native American contributions to this proud and important war effort. <--!http://saturn.guestworld.tripod.lycos.com/wgb/wgb.dbm?owner=KB5KCD--> ******************** (((This note added by, J.C. Wheeler, Originator and Webmaster for the EC-47 History site.)))-- The information, photos etc. on the site is about 99% furnished by the folks who visit the site and were a part of the EC-47 Mission which ran from Mid-1966 thur May 15, 1974, when the mission was terminated. There is no slant in any direction on this site. Everything pertaining to the mission, the aircraft, and the people involved that is submitted is added as long as it is not slanderous, vulgar, indecent or a known outright lie. Everything here must be such that your 6 year old granddaughter or anyone else can read or view without being offended. David had been informed and now understands why the makup of information/photos, etc., are as they are. Comments: Hi!, I am the brother of Sgt. Peter R. Cressman, USAFSS. He was a "BEEP" on EC-47Q "BARON 52" downed over Steel Tiger Laos, Area 10G. I try to keep in touch with all of those who flew upon or were in anyway connected with the USAFSS. For now, sufffice to say that there are some inaccuracies in the public record regarding this loss. Hope to hear back from you. (Ron Schofield can vouch for my identity and credentials) Thanks, Pat

Comments: I was a 202 assigned to the ACC from Nov 67 to Sep 69. Going thru this site brought up a lot of buried memories. Also, recognized quite a few names but was more surprised that there are lots of names missing. One fond memory is of the great sandwiches made by the hooth girl across the street from the 6994th barracks/hootch bar. Does anybody remember Banger, our little crippled mutt, and all the times she met the crew bus and the beers she put down. A few of the names I remember are: Don Stagg (202), Ken Abernathy (292), Ray May (702), Ray Parker (292), Ken Harris (292), and CMS Walter Hunt (Ch of Maint). I was at NKP with May in 72-72, LinKou with Harris in 69, Don was a classmate at Goodfellow. I remember playing ball with Rick Hand at TSN. Les Kimball was our 1st Sgt, I've got pics of Mike Pressler leaving (lei aroung his neck an the steps of a 727), and Paul Weyandt and I had more than a few of the local brews at both NKP and Clark (one hell of a man - he was far to young to go). I traveled abround quite a bit in 20+ years (San Vito, NSA, Vn, Thai, Laos, Taiwan, Oki, P.I., Korea, March AFB, Wright-Patt, Fairchild, and Scott. The most memorable times are the ones I spent with the 6994th. Drop me a line or two and rekindle old memories and friendships.

I surfed the site for the first time for about an hour and feel I have not yet scratched the surface as to what he did. The site is very informative and educational and plan on coming back ever free moment to learn more about your duties and what your missions were. Comments: I was one of the original test pilots that set up the TDY Squadron at Grenier Field in Manchester, NH. The purpose of this Squadron was to calibrate the EC-47 with its classified equipment, assemble crew and send them on their way to Tan Son Nhut. The Squadron was formed in the spring of 1966 and after 6 months TDY, I went back to my home base at Hill AFB to find I had orders, along with several of my fellow engineers/pilots, Al Reeser, Joe Steinguesser, and Roy Gentry, to pick up a Gooney and take it to Tan Son Nhut. I was the last of the Hill AFB guys to pick up a crew and plane and head west. We left Grenier Field in January 1967 and after 33 days enroute made it to Tan Son Nhut. The 33 day trip is another story that would take too much space. I flew 120 plus missions at Tan Son Nhut, mostly with the 360 TEWS. After a few months, I became the 460th Recon Wing EC-47 Standardization Pilot and kept this job until leaving in January 1968. Thanks J.C. for a wonderful vehicle to renew memories and friends.

Comments: Joe, (RE: John Ekwall Email, 990520) I was introduced to your 'memory provking and most excellent' site today by Dave Brooks, Col USAF (Ret) after I hearing him talking to the EE / Proj Mgr in the next cube (HQ AFCEE/DCM [Dsgn & Constr Directorate, Medical Division], Brooks AFB, TX). I have seen or heard from another PRONG or DACRON call sign since Oct 71. I read a guest e'mail from John Ekwall, Col USAF (Ret) who was a fellow pilot at Phu Cat during my Oct 70-71 tour. I have been unable to reply to his AOL Email address (see his memo 5/20/99) in response to his request (something about an URL difficulty). Perhaps this memo will be visible to him. Unfortunately, I was unaware of the 'EC-47 Reunion' in S.A., this past week-end. Per D.B., I understand the next event will be in the fall of '00. Perhaps I will be able to attend. Note: I have a last flight photos and aerial view slides of "tall, muliple cascade waterfalls", etc. -- Horace Hopper, former 1LT 361 TEWS 'Goon' driver - Asst Vehicle Ops Officer - Awds & Decs Staffer, Oct 70-71, @1530cdt Tues 990601 PS: "Any van with less than 90-degrees of play in the steering is fully operational." Memorable event: I was awarded the infamous "WALKING PRONG" as the last pilot to arrive Phu Cat in Oct '70. ======================== John Ekwall, Remember the name, but not yet the face (need to view the photos again) -- but, I was a 1LT (co-pilot, first pilot, & A/C) at Phu Cat from 29 Oct 70 thru early Oct 71, before departing for Sheppard AFB TX (2 B A C-54 1st pilot ... then a C-118 1st pilot -- can U say DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT career with ATC, '71- Jun'74). Now a Civil Service Architect (since Nov '75) with AFCEE/DCM, Brooks AFB (SE San Antonio) TX. My work takes me to Beale, Los Angeles, Luke, McChord, and Travis AFBs where I am managing Medical MILCON projects. Expect to retire in a little over one year. Well, you have my address -- so let me know how things are with you. Per info from D. Brooks, I may soon be visiting the VA doctor who wants to check on past Viet Nam tour folk (Agent Orange) to have him look at or refer me to a throat specialist. I do not and have not ever smoked and swallowing some types of food has recently become somewhat difficult. D.B. said the EC-47 site will have more info on that survey in addition to the first 'reunion' notes from the past weekend. Via con Dios, HH@1440cdt Tues 990601

Comments: Got your web site from Revetments Magazine, and decided to take a look. Most of the guests who signed in with you were in TEWS long after I was. Got there in November,1966, after a 31 day flight from Manchester,N.H., because of a 17 day delay for an engine change at Elmendorf, Alaska. We were mortered on December 4th, which was our welcome to TSN. Had 129 missions, flew flight test several months, but had to come home early. Our son was stationed with the 173rd Airborne at Ben Hau, and was killed in a chopper crash after taking groundfire. I had just taken off from TSN, and saw a chopper go down. Called in to Rescue, but ddidn't learn till months later that it was his chopper. Came home to bury him at Arlington, and was not sent back. Retired from the Air Force in 1970, and have settled in N.C., my original home. Keep up the good work, and I'll keep checking your site.

He would love to hear from anyone that was over there with him, but he doesn't have access to e-mail so I am doing it for him. Comments: Picked up my aircraft in New Hampshire in Jan 1967. Flew cross country to McClellan AFB, Ca. On to Washington State. From there to Elmerndorf, Alaska. We took off from Ca. at about 33,000 gross. I think we landed at Elmerndorf at about 40,000 gross. It seems we turned on the wing de-icing boots too soon and had ice build up on the wings that we could not get off. When we landed everyone was surprised that we were able to stay in the air. But knowing the Goon everything is possible. 10 days at Elmerndorf then on to Adak--that's where the fun began. We landed that night and had winds of 80+ mph. It collapsed both main gear struts, lost control locks, broke rudder balance cables and ripped holes in rudder and left elevators. As you know, the Navy runs the show at Adak and they had no fabric. So after we constructed balance cables for the rudder I asked the Navy guys for some duct tape. It's like WD 40--good for everything. We got a ground heater and heated the fabric on the elevator and the rudder and applied the duct tape. I told Maj. Cervantes, my A/C, what I had done. The crew discussed it and we decided to continue on to Midway, Guam and then the Phillipines. That's where they removed the ferry tanks and replaced the rudder and left elevator before proceeding on to Vietnam. It just goes to show you can't keep a good Goon down. My second tour in Vietnam was 1970 also on C-47's, the Phsy-birds, out of Bien Hoa with the 9th SOS. But that's another story where I almost met my Waterloo. I cannot say enough about the old Goons. They took me through two tours and brought me home. J.C.'s website is just fantastic and I am enjoying it more and more everyday. Keep up the good work.

Comments: Great Web site! You had a terrific career, and were fortunate to have worked with so many great people and planes. I, too had one of the best careers imaginable; loved every minute of it. My first experience with a multi-engine plane was a DC-3 Trans Texas Airline from Austin Texas to San Diego. A little later, after switching over to the Air Force, I crewed Goonies at Osan AB, Korea, (6314th FMS) as a Radio Operator. My first flight on a C-124 was from Tachikawa to Osan after inprocessing at Yamata AS. Found out the origin of the term "Big Shakey." Went on to TC-54Ds and T-29Bs at Keesler (EWO school and Nav continuation), the to Mather still on TC-54s. While at Mather I was ferry crew for many, many Goonies to Cambodia, Saigon, P.I. The ferry tanks on those C-47s were two 550 gal C-119 Benson tanks strapped to the deck. Of all the legs flown from McClellan to Honolulu, 15 hrs 45 min was the shortest, and 17:55 the longest. Went on to the 58th Air Rescue Sq at Wheelus AB, Tripoli, Libya and RO'd on HC-54, HU-16, HC-97G, and HC-130H. Then it was EC-121D at McClellan, Udorn, and Korat, back to Korat in EC-121R after training at Otis AFB, MA. After language school, spent four years in Rio de Janeiro flying C-54 and VT-29. Spent my last four years on the Looking Glass at Offutt and retired at 20 years, just like my original plan. After all that, I still think gasoline engines are the only way to feel like you're flying. I missed it much more than I thought I would after more than 10,000 hours of flying, so to satisfy that urge I still fly (single engine, commercial, instrument--can't afford big round engines!) and another 2,200 hours. Believe me, I know exactly how you feel about the Goon and the other REAL airplanes. Keep up the good work. I will visit your site many more times; it's too good to stay away from.

I have started a page of my own, partly inspired by J.C., and am using it to post status messages about the medical progress of two family members (both veterans) who are struggling against cancer. I also have a section containing some simple utility programs (ever wonder what 1-800-CALLMOM translates to?) that you might like. If anyone has advice about Squamous Cell Carcinoma or Cancer of the Stomach and Lymph system, we are open to advice. We certainly solicit your prayers; both men are diagnosed as terminal.

I remember sitting in the outdoor theater during the monsoons watching "Combat" TV reruns while "Spooky" was dropping flares and working out with miniguns. I remember the A1E Skyraiders taking off and bombing the surrounding mountains. I remember the large Buddah you could see from the base. I remember the beach surrounded by barbed wire and army troops on guard while we were swimming. I have fond memories of Nha Trang. Take care and all the best

I was also in the P.I. from 1968 to early 1970 before my tour as an X-1 from 1970-1971. I've got some fond memories and some not so fond memories (namely the time "someone" got us 25 miles into North Vietnam when Mig's were scrambled and the race between the Phantoms and the Mig's was the only thing that kept us from biting the dust.) But I've gotten past that now and have enjoyed your page and the memories that it brought back. Thanks to my son I found this page and was able to recognize a couple of names. So don't hesitate to write in. Thanks for the generous amount of interest in the page. Lets keep a good thing going. Paul R. Kirkwold

Comments: I signed awhile back but evidently the message got lost with the change over that JC did. I was a Airborne 202 at the 6994th from Feb '70 til Feb '71. I spent about 3 weeks at Phu Cat, 4 months at NKP, and the balance at DaNang. I have seen some names of some guys from Lin Kou and DaNang, such as Don Boston, Neil Sides, Art Silvin, and a mention of Bill Christian who I think was the same Bill Christian at Lin Kou. I had a great time in the AF even though I used to jump all over you guys who were "over 4". I ended up spending just about 5 years. I'm looking forward to the reunion in San Antonio and I hope we have a great showing. Email me at will.

Served at the 6949th at Offutt from Jan 70 through April '71. I was the Operations Officer at Det 3 in NKP from June '71 to Dec '71 and then PCS'd to Danang @ Det 2 from Dec '71 to Jun '72. I saw Dave Eddy's entry and also saw references to Todd Melton. Both familiar. Todd was at Danang with me as was "KIWI", both of whom I understand were on Baron 52. Came back to the HQ USAFSS Command Post from Jul '72 - Mar '74. Then cross-trained into the transportation career field. I've been wondering if the 6994 ever had any reunions --- please let me know. Other names I recall: Skeeter @ NKP, Bob Sherwood, Kermit Wegner, LTC McMakin, Art Silva, "JJ" Pitzeruse, Junior Barnes. I've got a picture of the "Moon Goon" somewhere here at the house. Thanks again.

A previous reunion was held in Seymour, IN in 1986. We had about 22 former 203's and many family members. Another one is tentatively scheduled for Monterey, CA in August of 1999 - thirty years after we graduated from language school. Maybe we will reconsider and go to San Antone.

Unfortunately I was young at the time of the war and he passed away while I was still too young to completely understand what all he did during the war. I have gone on to join the USAF and now Fly F-16s. I am a veteran of the Persian Gulf War and dropped tons of bombs on Saddam during that war. I have also served in the Euroean Theater and am now in Korea. I will soon be in Texas teaching the next generation of USAF pilots how to fly. If you have any information regarding the history of my father in SEA, please send it to me. Thanks........Glen K. Lawson

It's great to find familiar names (Dave Eddy, Ed Benningfield, etc.) I flew with them as a 202 at Ton Son Nhut from July '71 to May '72. It was the best assignment of my 25 + years in the Air Force. Comments: I really enjoyed this homepage. My husband is in the Air Force. He is stationed in Chong Ju, South Korea right now for a 12 month tour. We have been in the Air Force about 7 years now. We have spent most of our tour in Texas too. I like the idea of moving around. We have 2 children. We are trying to go to Florida after he gets back from his tour. We are hopeing for the best. We were stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. This was his first assignment. We were their for 2 years. I know where the lake is you talked about in the picture where your wife and child were. It has changed just alittle. He went to Kunsan, South Korea after San Antonio. Yes, this makes his 2nd tour in South Korea. He is in Ammunition. After he left South Korea the first time his assignment was to Dyess AFB. Abilene, TX. After 3 years there he got the assignment to go back but this time it was to a Korean base. He said it is different from Kunsan but he is entitled to a little more pay. I chose to go back home to Alabama. Our follow on didn't go through so we took the chance of him going without a follow on anywhere else. They said we had a good chance of getting where we wanted since it was his second time over there. Well, I wish you well and I hope my husband has a good career like you did. He is a SSgt. He can't test for Tech until next year. He just put on Staff about Aug. 1998. Good luck to you and your family.

Comments: Very good page. I was in the Air Force for 7 1/2 yrs, just recently separated 4 months ago, and its interesting to learn about other people's experiences in the military. My dad was in Vietnam, too, and just retired about the same time I got out of the Air Force. I hope you find the people your looking for.

Comments: Hi Jim...great page. I have a lot to review yet, but have seen some familiar names and pics. You have done a great job. The EC-47's did a fantastic job in Nam and should be remembered. This is one super way of doing that. I was with the program from it's inception, flying the first prototype (Hawkeye) out of TSN beginning in Sep 1965. That tail number by the way was 50925. The prototype system was the ARD-18, and 50925 was sent back to Sanders Assoc to be modified and outfitted with the ALR-34. Missing from your list is 49268 (can't recall the year, but I think a 43 model) which was the first ALR-34 delivered in April of 67. Our crew Businger, Line, and others I can't recall, were the first to fly that one and started the training of the 6994th Operators and the front enders on the system. I need to do some digging to pull up more information, but those two tail numbers stick in my mind. Have long since lost or retired my Form 5 and the memory is not what it used to be. There was a second Hawkeye ...and I want to say that it was 703. Maybe Bob Line can help with that. Iwas also fortunate to start training for the TEWS on the ALR-35 and the ALR-38 system. Ended up several years of ARDF fun by closing TSN in Dec of 72. Again...thanks for your page. It is, and will be, a great memory maker for us that spent time in the Goons.

Comments: I was with the 360th TEWS from Nov. 1968 to Nov. 1969. I remember having a hell of a time replacing the heat exchanger on "Balls Nine"!! It is great to see these photos and see this history. I have always said the Gooney Bird is the best aircraft the Air Force ever owned!! Mel Francis
