C-47 Hulks Located in Thailand
by Ben Pennell

Just for info I drove to Bangkok the other day and saw two
Goons kind of in a junk yard parked beside the highway so
next trip I'll try to find out from where they came. Didn't
see any numbers on the tail, but, other places to look.

Had 5th Heart attack on 12 June and actually was in an ambulance
going to Bangkok for Angiogram when I saw the Birds parked on
the side of the road. So going to Cha Am and Hua Hin soon so
will make it a point to see who they belonged to. 73 and take
care, Ben 4F2BP/HS0

Hi J.C.
In regards to the C-47 hulk sightings in Thailand, I can say with some assurance that we never gave or sold any EC's to the Thai's during the period of our operations over there. While stationed at Ubon, I was involved in a meeting that was to determine if the U.S. would give some of the EC's to them for their use. My recommendation at the time was that in my view they did not have the training and capability to maintain solid state devices, and the equipment would probably wind up sitting on the ramps and wouldn't be operable for very long.

Besides that, having a squadron of planes was considered "Power" to the commanders which the aircraft would belong.

As far as I know, there was no EC's given to the Thai Government and I make that statement in reference to the meeting we had while a member (Shop Supervisor) at Det 3 6994th SS in 1973-1974. We had a General Officer and other staff at the meeting and they were to determine the disposition of some of the aircraft, as I recall the events.

The hulks that are shown are not of the EC type. The nose is not a radome for the weather radar that all EC's had installed. I thought I would put in my 2 cents worth to see if maybe I could help. Hope my input was worth a little anyway.

Thanks again for such a fabulous website. You have done such a fine job in building the site and I am sure there is much more out there to be added.

Cheers, Stan Poyas

More Info on these aircraft.

Just found your site with the photos of the two Thai C-47's '210' and '919' These were at Don Muang, Bangkok until the late 90's. '919' is ex 43-49919.

The last photo on the site "writing on 919" is the Thai serial, which translates as L2-25/01, being the 25th C-47 acquired by the Thai AF.

I am a specialist on Thai aviation, so if I can add anything please let me know.
