Kelly AFB, Texas
.
Back at Kelly and the 19th. Only this time, the squadron was a part of Military Airlift Command and was titled the 19th Military Airlift Squadron. They were also now flying the 1953 C model C-124's. I was still on flying status as a Flight Mechanic and was again traveling the world. And again, Nick was here, although I did not work for him on this tour. Nick would become aware that I had made Technical Sergeant but would not see me put on the new rank. Nick would retire and pass away while I was here this time. A great loss and a larger funeral I have never seen.
After a few months, I quit flying and moved into Maintenance Comtrol. I was given a Senior Controller position and was working for a CMSgt Joe Allen. I enjoyed this job very much because when I first started, Sgt Allen told me my job was to make decissions. He further assured me that when I made a decision, I should stand by it and not change it. He further stated, "If you make the decision, be it right or wrong, you are right in that you made it, and will have all the backing needed." "If you fail to make the decision, you are wrong, and I will have your hide", a little different word was used for hide. This proved to be true on more than one occassion and always in my favor.
Sgt Allen imformed me after the death of Nick, that he, Nick, had been very instrumental in my getting the Controller job and that he had highly recommended me for the job. I had always thought that he had something to do with it, now I knew.
Then in November, as the 19th was desolving, I received an assignment to McGuire AFB, New Jersey. I was soon on my way to the north country, leaving Texas for my first non-Texas stateside assignment. Now I was off to McGuire AFB, New Jersey. |
